This collection of essays demonstrates the many varied aspects of programming, showing how programming can be both a fun and elegant science. Some of the essays cover programming techniques, like how profilers can provide insight into the dynamic behavior of programs, and methods for making data files self-describing. These techniques deal with real programs and they are realistically illustrated, using the C and Awk languages. Bentley also provides the reader with some tricks of the programmer's trade, like a collection of rules of thumb and hints for finding simple solutions to hard problems. 作者简介：

Jon Bentley 世界著名计算机科学家，被誉为影响算法发展的十位大师之一。他先后任职于卡内基-梅隆大学（1976~1982）、贝尔实验室（1982~2001）和Avaya实验室（2001年至今）。在卡内基-梅隆大学担任教授期间，他培养了包括Tcl语言设计者John Ousterhout、Java语言设计者James Gosling、《算法导论》作者之一Charles Leiserson在内的许多计算机科学大家。2004年荣获Dr.Dobb's程序设计卓越奖。

@ solrex 读完第一章我就觉得这本书值五星。 @ 疯凰 看了后，感觉跟第一卷有很大不同，更注重于编程的习惯，策略；而不是一些具体有趣的问题。像 profiling 这个，还是看看这个书比较好：code optimization: effective memory usage. 好像也有翻译版本的了 @ ning 中文版。。 @ O(1) 的小乐 拿出一本消遣一下 @ yinchaoonline 和 Programming Pearls属于同一系列 @ 流光 第二本的anecdotes感觉上会更多点？ @ 江湖骗子 @ O(1) 的小乐 拿出一本消遣一下 @ lushl9301 一星期简单就看过了这本书，很多内容基于前一本。不过我觉得作者有些地方有些太过geek，太过偏激。一直在说小语言多么多么好，一直在说awk多么多么方便。。。唉，读着不是很高兴。。 @ RickRashidTang 打通任督六脉之作–Jon老师篇
